I just read about Local Organics in Green Magazine. They are a small, home-based business and actually live just around the corner from me in Brunswick East. They found (as I have) that organic produce is often not great quality, sometimes because it has to travel far and wide to get to us. These guys made contact with local farmers and found some that were willing to sell direct to them as long as they organised large enough orders.
Starting small with a few friends, these inspirational people have built up a small business in their backyard. Members get involved in packing & distributing the produce on a volunteer basis (with credits towards fruit & veg) and regular events are organised around the food community. Members even go and visit the farmers and get to know the source of the food they eat.
I love that I live somewhere that makes this possible and that a couple of ordinary people with a passion have made it possible. I’ve placed a trial order today, and will go and pick up my locally grown, seasonal box of fruit & veg on Thursday. I have been looking for exactly this – an affordable, local, organic food option with a genuine connection to the farmer. I do hope it’s good!
Local Organics is is a member-based social enterprise created to give us all access to ethical food, farms and information. Eating this way connects us to the land, the food, the processes and each other. http://www.localorg.com.au/
